FarmingProgression

Gold and elixir buy buildings. Dark elixir buys heroes, and heroes are the difference between an army that works and an army that nearly works. From the moment it unlocks, dark elixir is the resource that gates your real progress, and it is the hardest one to get.

What it is actually for

Dark elixir funds three things, in descending order of importance:

  1. Heroes. The Barbarian King, Archer Queen and their successors are all upgraded with dark elixir, and hero levels contribute to attacking power more than almost any other upgrade in the game. They are also the upgrades with the longest timers, which means every day you are not upgrading a hero is a day permanently lost.
  2. Dark troops. Hog Riders, Valkyries, Witches, Golems and the rest are trained with dark elixir, so a dark-troop army has a running cost as well as a research cost.
  3. Dark spells and assorted upgrades. Cheaper, but they add up.

Because heroes sit at the top of that list and heroes cannot be attacked with while they are upgrading, dark elixir management is really schedule management, which is covered in upgrade priority.

Why it is so scarce

Three reasons compound. Drills produce it far more slowly than mines produce gold. Storages hold a small stealable share, so raiding rich players yields little. And the drills themselves are usually placed inside the base, so you cannot strip them with a surface army the way you strip collectors.

The result is a resource where the difference between a good farming approach and a bad one is enormous. Players who farm dark elixir deliberately upgrade heroes continuously; players who pick it up incidentally spend most of the game with heroes several levels behind.

How to farm it

Three approaches, and most players end up mixing them.

What ties all three together is the skip discipline. Dark elixir farming is a search problem more than a combat problem: set a hard minimum, skip fast, and do not talk yourself into a marginal base because you have been searching for a while.

Protecting your own

The last point is the one that separates players. Dark elixir left in storage overnight is an invitation; dark elixir committed to a hero is progress you keep.

Drill production rates, capacities and costs for every level are on the Dark Elixir Drill page, read from the game files rather than reproduced here.

Frequently asked

What is dark elixir used for?

Primarily heroes, which are the single biggest contributor to attacking strength, plus dark troops such as Hog Riders and Golems and the dark spells. Because hero upgrades take the longest and matter the most, dark elixir effectively sets the pace of your late-game progress.

What is the fastest way to farm dark elixir?

Usually drill sniping with a small cheap force combined with a strict skip minimum, since drills hold a large share of stealable dark elixir and are far cheaper to reach than the core storage. In higher leagues the league bonus becomes a large and much more predictable source.

Why do I keep losing my dark elixir?

Almost always because it is sitting in full drills or in a storage that is not deep enough in the base, or because you logged off holding it. Collect drills every session, keep the Dark Elixir Storage in your most protected compartment, and start a hero upgrade before closing the game.
