The Barbarian King is a durable ground hero with high hitpoints and solid damage. He is the first hero most players unlock and remains one of the most useful, largely because he is the ideal tool for the funnelling work every ground attack needs.

What he does

He fights as a very durable ground troop with no preferred target, and has an ability that increases his survivability and damage when activated. He also defends your village, waking when an attacker comes near his altar.

Because he is durable and returns after every attack, he is effectively a free unit you can spend recklessly, which is exactly what funnel work requires.

How to use him

Send him down a flank to clear the shoulder buildings and open the corridor for your main army. See funnelling.
Activate the ability before he dies, not after. An unactivated ability is the most common waste in the game.
Do not send him into the core alone. Durable is not immortal, and a King grinding through a defended compartment on his own dies slowly and pointlessly.

Upgrading him

He is upgraded with dark elixir, and he is unavailable while upgrading, on offence and on defence. That is a real cost, and it is still worth paying continuously. Hero levels are the largest single contributor to attacking power over time, and the only way to finish upgrades with timers this long is to always have one running. See upgrade priority.

Frequently asked

Should I upgrade heroes even though I cannot attack with them?

Yes. Hero upgrades have the longest timers in the game, so the only way to finish them is to keep one running continuously. Attacking without a hero for a few days costs far less than being permanently several levels behind.

What is the Barbarian King used for?

Most often funnelling, sent down a flank to clear the outside buildings so the main army paths into the core. He is durable, hits hard and returns after every attack, which makes him the ideal unit to spend on work that would kill anything else.
