Shields and Village Guard Explained

A shield stops other players attacking your village. Village Guard does the same thing for a shorter window without the restrictions. Together they set the rhythm of the game: when you are safe, when you are exposed, and when your loot is at risk. Most players treat shields as something that happens to them. Efficient players treat them as a resource to spend.
How you get a shield
You are awarded a shield when someone attacks your village and does enough damage. The more damage they do, the longer the shield: a scrape gives you nothing, a partial destruction gives you a short shield, and a full wipe gives you the longest one. The exact thresholds and durations are Supercell's to change and have moved several times over the years, but the shape is constant, more damage taken means more protection granted.
This produces a counterintuitive truth that trips up new players: losing a defence is not necessarily bad. If your storages are empty because you spent everything before logging off, an attacker who flattens your base has taken almost nothing from you and handed you hours of free, protected farming time. You have effectively traded trophies you did not need for safety you did.
Village Guard
Village Guard is a short protected period, typically measured in tens of minutes to a few hours, during which you cannot be attacked. It appears in several situations: after a shield expires, after certain attacks, and as a reward from various parts of the game.
The critical difference from a shield is that attacking during Village Guard does not consume it. Under a shield, going on the offensive costs you protection. Under Guard, it does not. That makes Guard the single best window in the game to farm aggressively: you can attack repeatedly, stack up loot, and remain untouchable while you do it.
The mistake almost everyone makes is letting Guard tick away while they are at work or asleep. Guard is only worth what you do with it. If you see Guard time on the clock, that is the moment to train an army and go.
Attacking while shielded
You can attack while holding a shield, but it costs you. Each attack reduces the shield's remaining duration, and after a limited number of attacks the shield ends entirely. The game tells you this before you commit, with a warning on the attack button.
How to think about it: a shield is a stock of protected hours, and each attack spends some of that stock. Spend it deliberately. Three high-value attacks that fund a hero upgrade are a good use of a shield. Five aimless attacks that net you nothing and end your protection early are not.
- Scout before you spend. If you are going to burn shield time, make it count. Skip harder and set a higher loot minimum than you would normally.
- Empty your storages first. The instant your shield ends you are exposed. Enter that moment with nothing worth taking.
- Watch the queue. There is no point ending your shield to gather loot you have nowhere to spend. Have upgrades ready to start.
The farmer's shield cycle
Experienced farmers run a repeating loop rather than playing at random:
- Log in, collect the loot cart and the collectors.
- Immediately queue upgrades so storages sit low.
- Fill an army, which is instant and free, and attack through whatever shield or Guard time is available rather than hoarding it.
- Spend the returns before logging off, walls absorbing whatever is left over.
- Get attacked while offline, be worth almost nothing to the attacker, and receive a fresh shield for the trouble.
Run consistently, this converts the thing that feels like a punishment, being raided, into a scheduling tool. You are never protecting a pile of loot, because there is never a pile of loot to protect.
A note on purchased protection. Shields have historically been buyable with gems. Whether that is ever worth it depends entirely on what you are protecting. If your storages are full and a hero upgrade is one attack away, maybe. If you follow the cycle above, you will almost never need to, which is rather the point.
Frequently asked
Does attacking break my shield in Clash of Clans?
Not immediately. Attacking while shielded reduces the shield's remaining time, and the shield ends after a limited number of attacks. Village Guard is different: attacking during Guard does not consume it at all, which makes Guard the best window to farm aggressively.
Is losing a defence bad?
Often it is actively good. If your storages are empty, an attacker who destroys your base takes almost nothing and you receive a shield in exchange. Farmers deliberately keep storages low precisely so that defeats cost them little and buy them protected time.
What is the difference between a shield and Village Guard?
Both prevent other players from attacking you. A shield is longer and is spent when you attack; Village Guard is shorter but is not consumed by attacking, so you can farm freely underneath it.
