The Scattershot fires a heavy area attack that hits both air and ground, and it is specifically brutal against troops moving together. It is one of the main reasons late-game attacks spread out.
What it does
Deals substantial area damage covering a wide footprint, against both movement types. Where a Wizard Tower discourages grouping, a Scattershot punishes it outright, removing whole ranks of support troops in a shot.
Attacking and defending it
On defence, centre it and cover it, since it is a priority target for every serious attacker. On offence, it is the second most common reason to carry a Freeze Spell after the Inferno Tower: freezing a Scattershot as your damage line crosses its coverage is frequently what decides a war attack.

What counters the Scattershot when attacking?
Spreading your army so a single shot cannot hit the whole group, and carrying a Freeze Spell for the moment your damage line crosses its coverage. It is one of the two defences that most often justify a freeze.
Where should the Scattershot go?
Centrally and covered by other defences, since attackers prioritise it. Its value comes from hitting armies that must pass through the core, so placing it on the perimeter wastes most of its coverage.
