How to Do a Dragon Attack in Clash of Clans

Updated: 18 September 2026 · By the Goblins Farm team

Dragon attacks work because they remove the hardest part of attacking. Air troops ignore walls and pathing, so instead of managing a funnel you make one good decision: which side has the weakest anti-air.

Which side to attack

If your ground attacks keep stalling at 50 per cent, switching to air for a while is not a retreat. It removes pathing from the equation entirely and lets you practise deployment and spell timing without also fighting the base layout.

Step by step

  1. Find the Air Defenses

Before anything else. Scout the base and locate every Air Defense. This decides the entire attack.

  2. Pick the side with the weakest anti-air coverage

Not the side nearest the Town Hall. Not the side that looks open. The side where the fewest Air Defenses can reach your dragons at once.

  3. Deal with the Clan Castle

Defending troops will come for your dragons too. Lure and kill them first if the Castle is filled.

  4. Deploy in a spread line, all at once

Dragons work as a wave. Trickling them in one at a time feeds them to the defences individually. Spread them so a single air splash defence cannot hit the whole group.

  5. Send a Baby Dragon down each flank if you have them

Kept away from the main group they enrage and clear the outside buildings quickly, which keeps the main wave heading inward.

  6. Rage as they engage the first Air Defense

The attack is decided by how fast the anti-air dies. That is where the spell goes, not on the walk in.

  7. Save one spell for the second Air Defense

The first is usually fine. It is the second and third that kill the wave, so do not spend everything early.

Why this works and when it stops

It works because walls, compartments and troop pathing, the three things that make ground attacks hard, are all irrelevant to air units. It stops working when bases start carrying enough well-spread anti-air and air-targeting splash that a wave cannot survive long enough to clear it, which is exactly what higher Town Halls build for. At that point the skills you practised, deployment spread and spell timing, carry over to whatever you switch to.

Frequently asked

Why do my dragon attacks fail?

Nearly always because the wave was deployed into the strongest anti-air side, or trickled in a few at a time instead of as one spread group. Scout every Air Defense before deploying and commit to the side where the fewest can reach you at once.

Are dragon attacks good for farming?

Not especially. Dragons are expensive and slow to train, and they attack whatever is nearest rather than seeking loot, so they spend the attack destroying buildings that hold nothing. They are a war and trophy army, not a farming one.
