How to Farm Dark Elixir in Clash of Clans

Dark elixir decides how fast your heroes grow, and heroes decide how good your attacks are. It is also the hardest resource to accumulate, which makes farming it deliberately one of the highest-value habits in the game.
Most players acquire dark elixir accidentally and wonder why their heroes are behind. The players whose heroes are not behind farm it on purpose, using one of three approaches.
Step by step
- Decide which approach you are using today
Drill sniping, full storage attacks, or league bonus farming. Mixing them randomly within a session is how you end up with an expensive army attacking a cheap target.
- For drill sniping, set a hard minimum and skip fast
Look for drills placed loosely, near the edge or in a weak compartment. Take only the drills with a small cheap force. Yield per attack is low; yield per hour is high if your skip discipline holds.
- For storage attacks, check the preview against the clock
Reaching the Dark Elixir Storage means going into the core, which takes a full attack and most of the timer. The army is free; the minutes are not. Only commit when the preview justifies spending them, and remember you will not take all of it.
- For league bonus farming, be honest about your win rate
Higher leagues pay a substantial dark elixir bonus for winning. That is only income if you actually win reliably. If you are losing half your attacks up there, the bonus is theoretical.
- Collect your own drills every session
Dark elixir sitting in a full drill is the most stealable dark elixir on your base.
- Start a hero upgrade before you log off
Dark elixir committed to a hero cannot be stolen. This single habit is the difference between heroes that progress and heroes that do not.
Protecting what you earn
Put the Dark Elixir Storage in your most protected compartment, deeper than gold and elixir. Farmers will happily give up gold to reach dark elixir, so it needs to be the hardest thing on your base to get to. More on this in dark elixir and base building.
