How to Build a Clash of Clans Base From Scratch
Updated: 18 September 2026 · By the Goblins Farm team
Copied layouts are built for someone else's defence levels and a meta that has moved on. Building your own from principles takes twenty minutes and produces something you can actually fix when it fails.
You do not need to be creative. You need to answer five questions in order, and then watch what happens.
What this page talks about
Step by step
- Decide what the base is for
Farming, trophies or war. A farming base protects storages and dark elixir and cheerfully gives up the Town Hall. A trophy base does the opposite. A war base protects everything. Trying to do all three produces a base that does none.
- Place the core first
Put the Clan Castle centrally, so its radius covers every approach and cannot be triggered from safety. Then the Town Hall or the storages, depending on step one.
- Build compartments, not a ring
Divide the interior into many small walled cells. One ring around everything is a single door. Use storages as compartment walls; they have large hitpoints and slow attackers who stop to hit them.
- Centre the splash damage
Splash defences cover the compartments attackers must enter. On the perimeter they cover ground the attacker can ignore.
- Spread the anti-air, deep
Never two Air Defenses close enough that one spell radius reaches both. Across three or four sides, inside the base, covered by other defences.
- Tidy the perimeter
Loose buildings outside the walls give attackers free funnelling and free destruction percentage. Bring them in or accept what they cost you.
- Sweep for gaps
One missing wall tile is a door, and pathing finds it instantly. Walk the whole perimeter after every change.
- Play it for a few days, then watch every replay
This is the step everyone skips and it is the only one that produces information. Note where attackers deploy and which compartment falls first.
- Change one thing
Move a single defence or reshape one compartment, then watch again. Changing five things at once teaches you nothing.
What the replays will tell you
Three attackers entering from the same side is not bad luck, it is a design fact. A defence that dies first every time is either too far forward or not covered. An army that walks straight to your storages means your compartments are not doing their job. The principles behind all of this are in base building principles.
Frequently asked
Is it better to copy a base layout or build my own?
Start from a good layout if you like, but adapt it and then iterate from your own defence replays. A copied screenshot reflects someone else's defence levels and the attack meta when it was made, and you cannot fix what you do not understand.
Should I protect my Town Hall or my storages?
It depends on the base's purpose. A farming base protects storages and dark elixir and gives up the Town Hall, since losing a star costs far less than losing loot. A trophy base does the reverse. Decide this before you place a single building.
