How to Do Your First Clan War Attack
Updated: 18 September 2026 · By the Goblins Farm team
War attacks fail for predictable reasons, and almost all of them happen before a single troop is deployed. This is the routine that avoids them.
The difference between a war attack and a farming attack is that you are trying to destroy the base rather than profit from it, and that someone else is depending on the result. Both change how you prepare.
Step by step
- Scout during preparation day, not thirty seconds before
Look at your likely targets while there is no time pressure. Note the Clan Castle position, where the splash defences are, and which side has the fewest outside buildings.
- Ask your clan which base to take
Most clans expect you to attack your mirror, the base at your own position on the enemy map, or one or two above it. Attacking far below your position early takes a target away from someone else and wins nothing. Call your target in chat before you start.
- Request everything you need, early
Clan Castle troops, a siege machine, spells. Donations are not instant, and leaving it until the last hour is how attacks get made with the wrong army.
- Lure the Clan Castle first
Drop one cheap troop near the base edge until the garrison fires. Then drop another cheap troop far from the base and let them chase it into open ground, where you kill them with a poison spell or a handful of troops. Never attack into a live defensive Castle.
- Build the funnel
Clear the outside buildings on both shoulders of your entry point with heroes or a few cheap troops, so the main army paths inward rather than around the perimeter. This step is skipped constantly and it is why attacks stall at 50 per cent.
- Send the main army into the gap
Tank first, spread in a line, damage troops behind. Not a stack, and not all at once from one tile.
- Hold your spells
Spells go down when the army is engaged with something that matters, usually around the sixty-second mark, not in the first fifteen seconds because it feels productive.
- Post the result honestly
If it failed, say what happened. Someone else has to clean up that base and they need to know what beat you.
The war rules that matter most
- Use both attacks. An unused attack is a star the clan can never recover, and it is the most common reason players are removed from clans.
- Fill your own war Clan Castle. An empty one is a free star for the enemy.
- Only the best result on each base counts. Matching a teammate's two stars contributes nothing. Read Clan Wars before your first war.
Frequently asked
Which base should I attack in a clan war?
Usually your mirror, the base at your own position on the enemy map, or one or two above it, then use your second attack on whatever the clan still needs. Ask your clan first, since conventions vary, and always call your target in chat so two people do not attack the same base.
Why do my war attacks stall halfway?
Almost always a missing funnel or an unlured Clan Castle. Without a funnel your army walks around the outside of the base, and a live defensive Castle eats the push mid-attack. Both are fixed before you deploy your main army, not during.
