Rushing Your Town Hall: What It Costs and How to Avoid It
Updated: 18 September 2026 · By the Goblins Farm team
Rushing is not forbidden and it is not always wrong. It is a trade, and most players make it without knowing what they are trading. This explains the exchange rate and what to do if you have already made it.
Rushing means upgrading the Town Hall while the base beneath it is far from complete. The Town Hall upgrade button being available is not a recommendation.
What this page talks about
Step by step
- Understand what you gain
Access to new buildings, troops and levels sooner. That is genuinely worth something, particularly if you find new content motivating.
- Understand what you pay
Your defences are several tiers behind the players you now meet, so you lose more defences. Your army is behind the bases you are offered, so you win less. War matchmaking looks at what you own rather than whether it is upgraded, so your war matchups get harder. The result is a village that looks advanced and performs badly.
- Check whether you have already rushed
Heroes far below the cap for your level, laboratory research several tiers behind, and defences that die instantly are the symptoms. If war feels impossible and farming feels unprofitable, that is usually why.
- If you have rushed, fix heroes first
Hero levels are the largest contributor to attacking power and the slowest to recover, so they go first. Keep one upgrading permanently from now on.
- Then fix laboratory research
Research improves every attack forever, and rushed accounts are usually badly behind here.
- Then close defence category gaps
Not every building. The categories you are missing entirely, especially anti-air.
- Stop moving up until those three are reasonable
The dig-out only works if you stop digging.
The moderate position
Most experienced players do not max everything and do not skip categories either. Get heroes, research, army camps and the key defences to a sensible level for the Town Hall, leave some decorative buildings behind, and move on. Leaving a few walls unupgraded is fine. Leaving your heroes ten levels behind is not.
Frequently asked
Is rushing bad in Clash of Clans?
It is a trade rather than a mistake. You get new content sooner and pay with weaker defences, a weaker army relative to opponents and harder war matchups. The problem is that most players make the trade without realising they are making it.
How do I fix a rushed base?
Heroes first, because they contribute most and recover slowest, then laboratory research, then whichever defence categories you are missing entirely. And stop upgrading the Town Hall until those three are reasonable for your level.
